Good Things and Bulldog Brags

Reading is a really, really GOOD THING!

Nearly 300 hundred were in attendance for Reading Under the Sea: Dive Into a Good Book, JISD's annual literacy event on December 2! Hosted by the BARK Express Committee and held at Jasper Junior High, the event featured Community Partner booths, a face painting station, balloon animals, read-alongs, games, food, and live music. Best of all, each child left the event with at least two new books!

Community Partners in attendance included Southeast Texas Food Bank, Lamar Institute of Technology, Jasper-Newton Health Department-WIC, Communities in Schools, and Region 5.

Huge accolades are in order for everyone who made the evening a success!
  • Planning Committee-Dianne Pace, Joscelyn Adams, Emily Mathews, and Katy Pace
  • Shonda Brown, Lindsay Jeansonne, Jessica Brown, Amanda Owens, Natalia Johnson, Rachel Bryan, Rachel Alvis, and Donald Johnson helped set up and worked the event
  • Brenda Fleming and Kaylee Hill ran the face painting station
  • Michael Kerr did the balloon animals (and wore a sweet inflatable yellow submarine!)
  • Few and Jasper High School Parent Liaisons Charity Goodwin, Lisa Ratcliff, Jasmyne Hafford, and Jennifer Adams had tables
  • Steven Courville brought a JHS Saxophone Quartet to provide music
  • Principal Stephen Casey oversaw the event
  • Officer John Hardin provided security
  • Allen Hadnot and Jennifer Quintavalle provided new custom cornhole boards
  • BARK Committee Member Stacy Shultz donated and popped popcorn
  • United Methodist Church of the Pines volunteers Susan Stover, Linda McTernan, and Michelle Yentzen helped with food, read-alongs, and a special therapy dog guest for the kids
  • The Jasper High School National Honor Society students ran the sign-in table and games
  • The Jasper Junior High Students ran the craft table
  • Student photographer Ian Schofield photographed attendees at the RUTS backdrop
  • Estela Arriaga managed the Community Partners Tables and provided translation

Superintendent John Seybold and the Jasper ISD Board of Trustees are proud to recognize the following:

  • From Joshelyn Strother, JHS Assistant Principal-A huge shout-out to our Jasper High School Choir and their amazing director, Mrs. Nathena Hafford! As they prepare for their upcoming Christmas concert, this talented group has been hard at work rehearsing several beautiful pieces. They sounded absolutely melodic and magical! Their harmonies filled the room with Christmas spirit, and their dedication shows in every note they sing. We are so proud of the effort, discipline, and heart they pour into their craft. Way to go, JHS Choir! Keep shining and making Jasper proud!
  • From Jennifer Herrington, JISD CTE Director-I want to send out a BULLDOG BRAG to Daniel Chao and his Business students for earning their Industry Based Credentials this week. The following students have each tested and earned the Customer Service and Sales Specialist Certification awarded by the NRF Foundation: Ketavioes Boatner, Carlos Merlin Amador, Jasmine Smith, and Brandon Ramos. Well done Mr. Chao and your business partners.
  • From Haley Vaught, Instructional Coach-I would like to brag on Mrs. Emilee Gerngross. She has gone above and beyond to make sure that a fellow teacher’s substitute has meaningful work and clear plans for his classes while he has been out. She has also stayed on top of getting all of their grades entered in a timely manner. I know this has been a huge task for her on top of managing her own responsibilities, but she continues to give 100% every single day. Her dedication has truly made a difference, and it does not go unnoticed.
  • From Shana Hearnsberger, Instructional Coach-I would like to brag on Debbie Cordova and Lauren McSwain. These instructional coaches are team players who go above and beyond what is required to ensure student and teacher success. They are valuable assets to Jasper ISD.
  • From the JHS Top Dawg Admin Team-the JHS Top Dawg Nutrition Team does  an amazing job each and every day. They work hard to make sure our students are well taken care of from breakfast to lunch to after school meals. Thank you for your dedication, your kindness, and the care you put into keeping our kids nourished and ready to learn. We appreciate you!
