Happy Independence Day!
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
On July 4, 1776, members of the Second Continental Congress, representing the original Thirteen Colonies, convened in Philadelphia and unanimously adopted the Declaration of Independence. In the document, these men, later to be known as our nation’s Founding Fathers, stated why they regarded themselves as independent states no longer subject to British rule, planting the seeds from which the United States would grow.
Founding Father and later 2nd President of the United States John Adams wrote to his wife Abigail that he predicted the event would be celebrated by future generations with “pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations from one end of this continent to the other from this time forward forever more.” Time has proven these words to be prophetic, as the 4th of July is celebrated each year across our nation, perhaps not often with “guns, bells, and bonfires,” but with beautiful fireworks just as they were at the very first Independence Day celebrations on July 4, 1777 in Philadelphia and Boston.
The 4th of July continues to be an explosive display of patriotism. The Jasper-Lake Sam Rayburn Chamber of Commerce invites the community to take part in our local celebration on July 5th at Sandy Creek Park. See the flyer below, and you can find more information on the Chamber’s Facebook page:
