College Connection Program 30

1. Exactly what is College Connection Program 30?

This is a collaborative program between Jasper High School and Angelina College that will enable students the opportunity to complete their high school education, while at the same time earn as many as 30 college hours. By doing so, a student that completes this program may graduate from high school and begin his sophomore year of college.

2. Why would I want to participate in this program?

Probably one of the most important reasons of obtaining 30 college hours through this program can be measured in dollars and cents. If a student attended a four-year college and took 30 college hours, the cost of the program would be approximately doubled or more. The student is also able to earn high school credit at the same time. Any class in which a “B” or higher is earned, may count as an advanced measure for the Distinguished Achievement Program (DAP).

3. What do I have to do in order to participate in this college program?

First of all, I have to meet certain criteria in my high school classes to be eligible. If I am enrolled in a PAP class (either English or Social Studies), I must have at least an 85 average and the approval of my teacher, PLUS I must either pass the Accuplacer (or THEA) in the area of English and Math OR be exempt from the Accuplacer (or THEA) based on my TAKS ELA scores (2200 and at least a 3 on the writing portion) and a 2200 on the TAKS Math. If I am in a regular (rather than a PAP class), then I must have a grade of least a 90, teacher approval, and the same requirements for Accuplacer.

Secondly, I must have the approval of the high school counselor.

Last of all, I must have a parent signature indicating their approval for my entering this program and agreeing to the financial obligations that go with the program.

4. What does Dual-credit mean?

It means that I am able to earn both high school AND college credit after completing the course successfully.

5. What courses will I be able to take in order to graduate high school and earn 30 college hours?

I may begin by taking Dual-credit U.S. History (6 hours – 1301/1302) during my junior year, along with Speech (3 hours – dual credit) and Sociology (3 hours – dual credit). Then, in the summer between my junior and senior year, I can take Government (3 hours: 2301, or 6 hours: 2301 & 2302) and Economics (3 hours: 2301). In the fall of my senior year, I can take dual-credit English 4 (3 hours, 1301), plus either College Algebra (3 hours) or Music Appreciation (3 hours), followed in the spring with dual-credit English 4 (3 hours, 1302) and either College Algebra or Music Appreciation.

6. Will these college courses transfer to any four-year college?

All subjects should be transferable to any other college, as long as a student completes the course with at least a “C”. Certain colleges may require that you have both of the Government courses (2301 & 2302). Students will need to check with their individual college to ascertain transferable hours.
